Lease the Sun?

In the USA, we’ve talked seriously about solar energy for about 30 years. In some places, solar hot water has been a reality much longer than that, but the real benefit is to use photovoltaic panels to generate electricity. With photovoltaic panels, we have the ability to generate excess electricity during the day and sell it to the utility company through “netmetering”, i.e., we run the meter backwards. The utility’s peak usage is during the day. Through netmetering, you’ll sell the output of the photovoltaic panels to the utility. With enough of us netmetering, we can reduce the need for new power plants that are only used to meet peak demand. That will protect the environment for everyone and help keep rates from rising too fast. The technology is now good enough to make use of photovoltaic panels practical.

What has held us up? The cost! It can cost tens of thousands of dollars to install photovoltaic panels on your house. I saw an expert explain how, by using North Carolina’s very generous tax credits, a homeowner could install a 2 kilowatt-hour (kwh) system for just under $10,000, but most people need more capacity than 2 kwh, so the price goes up. Then the homeowner would be responsible for maintaining the system, as well as dealing with moving, reroofing, etc. The homeowner in a sense would buy the sun and handle all the support issues that follow.
